7+1 Healthy Linking Health Blogs

Written on March 16, 2008 – 1:58 am | by Alex |

healthy linking blogs dofollowHave you heard about “nofollow” in blogs? Wikipedia says:

nofollow is an HTML attribute value used to instruct search engines that a hyperlink should not influence the link target’s ranking in the search engine’s index… (see full article)

It means that when you comment on majority blogs and leave your link it makes almost nothing good for your blog. Main search engine - Google - don’t follow your link and don’t pay attention to your comments.

Almost all blog platforms by default are set up so that a “dead end” piece of code is inserted wherever there is a link in a comment, so that search engines will not “count” the link as they are crawling the internet. This was originally designed to help stop comment spam, but it doesn’t work. What it does is remove some of the incentive for your readers contribute to your site by commenting on your posts.

What can you do about it? Turn off “nofollow”. Show your commenters that you appreciate them. Spread the link love.

But there is also DoFollow movement:

DoFollow, I Follow, No Nofollow movement, that started at the inception of the Nofollow microformat tag back in 2005. For details about how you can remove rel=”nofollow” from your blog comments and trackbacks, please refer to: Ultimate List of DoFollow Plugins - Banish Nofollow From Comments and Trackbacks

I have joined this movement because we should “fight spam not blogs”. And I will be very glad to present you some of healthy linking (DoFollow) health related blogs I like.

1. Dental Health Magazine
WorlDental.org Dental Health Magazine was created for people who take care of their smile, oral and overall health. It writes about dental and oral care and hygiene, it discovers new dental products, it posts last dental news and presents professional dental clinics abroad. WorlDental.org exposes all the simple customer need to know to have a healthy teeth and beautiful smile.

2. Life Learning Today
Lifelearningtoday.com health related blog author: “The idea for this blog started in my head about 2 years ago. I’ve been learning a lot in my life over the last few years, losing a loved one, being a parent, building a writing business, building websites, working on improving difficult relationships, and trying to improve myself in all ways. When I discovered blogging this presented me with the perfect medium for sharing.”
A great site with many useful healthy tips like 5 Simple Ways to Eat Healthier.

3. The Fit Shack
JoLynn Braley, the fitness blog author write: “Here at The Fit Shack, I write about such topics as today’s processed and fast food industry, food addiction, sugar, emotional eating, and the mind/body connection. I don’t believe in quick fixes but do believe in getting to the core of what motivates you to overeat and then solving/healing those issues”.
Her one of recent post is How To Get Your Picky Eater to Eat Healthy Foods.
Upgrade: This blog isn’t DoFollow now, because of changing theme, but I hope JoLynn Braley won’t leave “nofollow” alive.

4. FullosseousFlap’s Dental Blog
Flap (so author call himself) follow our comments too. If they are not “snarky and profane”. On his dental health blog he writes in majority about dental care, health politics, Arnold and Hillary care… and Barak Obama… I like his comment policy: “I reserve the right to edit or delete any comment for any reason. If Flap edits your comment, most of the time Flap will add a notation, such as “Edited by Flap” or “Nice try, Troll!” Often times Flap will just delete the whole post and either warn or ban you”.
In January he wrote about “Dr. John Crippen from the NHS Blog Doctor has returned to the blogosphere“. Ok nice, let’s go further.

5. Urban Monk

      Hi Alex!

Thank you very much for mentioning my blog The Fit Shack! You know what though…..my old theme stopped working a few months ago and I had to disable all plugins at that time to troubleshoot the issue. It’s a longer story, but I’m not using do-follow on my blog right now. I’ve noticed that I’m not getting nearly as much spam as I used to either (which saves me a lot of time moderating) so I might keep it as is - I’m still deciding. Just thought I should let you know this. :)

If I keep it off however, I’m going to add some other ways to give back to my commenters - I am hoping to have these changes implemented by next week.

Keep up the great work with your blog, I really like the theme you’re using and how you have your newsletter subscription prominently placed in the upper right corner. :)

Ok, JoLynn, it’s not a big problem. Hope your deciding will be to remove a “nofollow”, but of course it’s a personal choice.

In any case you have a great blog.
      Thanks!

      Great idea!

You made me remove the nofollow link from the comments on my blog as well!

I like the concept of your blog btw :)

      Keep up the nice work.

If only the option in my comment tool actually removed the rel=nofollow… I will need to look into that.

There are several Wordpress dofollow plug-ins that a person can use on their own blogs. You can just Google that phrase or go to Andy Beard’s site for the list.
