Symptoms of depressionWe all go through ups and downs in our mood. Sadness is a normal reaction to life’s struggles, setbacks, and disappointments. We’re down in the dumps for a short time, then gradually the painful feelings dissipate and we move on with our lives — often the wiser for the experience. But when the low mood persists, interfering with your ability to work, study, eat, sleep, and have fun, it’s no longer normal.

It’s depression.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 10 American adults — or approximately 21 million people ― suffer from a depressive illness each year.

The various types of depression are very distinct, but they all share a common set of symptoms. Diagnosis oftentimes is dependent upon the number of symptoms present, and how severe they are.

But there are also opinions that depression can be good for us:

There is serious depression that needs help. There are poverty, abuse, bad circumstance that need addressing. But for most of us, a bit of depression, the article suggests, is a catalyst for reflection, change and growth

1. Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.

2. Loss of interest in daily activities
No interest in or ability to enjoy former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex.

3. Appetite or weight changes
Significant weight loss or weight gain—a change of more than 5% of body weight in a month.

4. Sleep changes
Either insomnia or oversleeping (also known as hypersomnia).

5. Psychomotor agitation or retardation
Either feeling “keyed up” and restless or sluggish and physically slowed down.

6. Loss of energy
Feeling fatigued and physically drained. Even small tasks are exhausting or take longer.

7. Self-loathing
Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Harsh criticism of perceived faults and mistakes.

8. Concentration problems
Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.

9. Irritability
Easily annoyed or frustrated. Lashing out in anger or snapping at others.

10. Aches and pains
New or worse physical symptoms, including headaches, backaches, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, and aching joints.

Not all depression sufferers experience all of the above symptoms but if you experience most you should see a doctor as soon as possible.
